THE SITTER:

Name: Mrs. Jennie Dennis

Description: In this frontal, half portrait, Mrs. Jennie Dennis looks directly into the camera. She wears a black blouse with large cap sleeves which are detailed with a band of ruffles. The dark, lacy, fabric which drapes around her neck and crosses her chest may be a large scarf. Her hair has been combed to the back of her head, and she wears no jewelry or hair ornament.

Medium: albumen photographic print mounted on cardstock

Description, front: This portrait is mounted on a grey cabinet card which is heavily embossed with flourishes and flowers.

Description, back: Handwritten in blue ink in script is, “To Ellen From Mrs. Jennie Dennis”, and “Taken July 1900”. Handwritten vertically on the left side of the card in pencil in cursive is, “Mrs Dennis”.

Date: July 1900

Condition: The bottom edge of this portrait has been scratched in several places exposing the white paper beneath the dark image.
