THE SITTERS:

Names: Robert & Henry McCleave

Description: Carte de visite of Robert and Henry McCleave. The older of the boys is standing, while the younger is sitting in a fringe studio chair. The older boy is wearing an unbuttoned jacket with a bow tie. The younger boy has on an infant's gown. The red tax stamp on the back of the image dates this card between 1865-1866. Of the three McCleave children (Carrie, Robert, and Henry) only one boy lived past their teenage years.

Description, back: On the back of this carte de visite is a 1-cent United States Internal Revenue stamp. On top of the stamp handwritten in black ink appears the letter “J” which is most probably the initial of the photographer. The 1-cent stamp documents that the purchaser paid less than ten cents for the portrait. Below the stamp handwritten in pencil is “Robert & Henry McCleave”.

Date: The United States Internal Revenue tax stamp on the back of this carte de visite documents that it was created between March 1865 and August 1866.
