THE PHOTOGRAPHER/ PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO:

JOHN QUINCY REED was born in 1841 in Abington, Massachusetts and died in 1902 in Petaluma. He worked as a photographer in Petaluma for over 25 years, moving his studio within the community to several different locations. He arrived into Petaluma from Stockton in 1870 and continued to work as a photographer in Petaluma until at least 1898. Many of his portraits of Petaluma’s citizens are of exceptionally fine quality. Description: Carte de visite of Carrie McCleave standing next to a fringe studio chair. She is wearing an off the shoulder, polka dot dress with chevron striping along the hemline. The red tax stamp on the back of the image dates this card between 1865-1866.

Description, back: On the back of this carte de visite is a 1-cent United States Internal Revenue stamp. On top of the stamp handwritten in black ink appears the letter “J” which was most probably the initial of the photographer. The 1-cent stamp documents that the purchaser paid less than ten cents for the portrait. Handwritten in pencil at the bottom is “Carrie Marrilla McCleave”.

Date: The United States Internal Revenue 1-cent tax stamp on the back of this carte de visite documents that the portrait was most probably created between March 1865 and August 1866.
