Hall, Gilbert Pine (1859-1932) (4 of 7)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of Gilbert Pine Hall

THE PHOTOGRAPHER/ PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO:

JOHN QUINCY REED was born in 1841 in Abington, Massachusetts and died in 1902 in Petaluma. He worked as a photographer in Petaluma for over 25 years, moving his studio within the community to several different locations. He arrived into Petaluma from Stockton in 1870 and continued to work as a photographer in Petaluma until at least 1898. Many of his portraits of Petaluma’s citizens are of exceptionally fine quality. (For additional information on this photographer and to view all portraits by him in the collection, click on his name in blue above.)

THE SITTER:

Name: Gilbert Pine Hall

Description: Gilbert Pine Hall sits in a studio chair and leans casually to his right while resting his elbow on what appears to be a sheepskin rug. While resting his left hand in his lap, he gazes up to his right. He is dressed in a double breasted jacket, white shirt, and white bow tie. On his left lapel is a large unidentifiable object. He is clean shaven, and his hair is parted off center, oiled and combed to the back of his head.

Biographical Note: Gilbert Pine Hall was born on April 20, 1859, in Manchester, Missouri, the thirteenth and youngest child of Sarah Gibbons Thomas and Dr. James Henry Hall.  When he was about 11, his family moved to Petaluma, California.  Gil continued his education and graduated in 1878 from Petaluma High School in a class of six students, including Mary Louise Brown, aka Lulu Brown.  Over the next few years, Gil worked in a variety of positions.  In April 1880, he was teaching school in the San Antonio district, and two years later, he and former classmate Lulu were married by the Marin County Justice of the Peace.  The Brown parents soon arranged for Father Cleary of St. Vincent’s parish to repeat the ceremony for the couple, and the Petaluma Courier announced that “Cupid’s darts are flying fast.”

Gil Hall joined the National Guard in 1882, was appointed Postmaster of Petaluma in 1886, and in 1890 was voted in as County Auditor and Recorder.  In 1894, he was admitted to the California Bar and began practicing law in Sonoma County. Gil’s name appeared frequently in Petaluma newspapers throughout his life and many times years after his death.  He was described as eloquent, controversial, golden-tongued, unpredictable, fiery, and many more colorful terms.  Bill Soberanes, a Petaluma Argus-Courier columnist for many years, wrote frequently about Gil Hall’s courtroom tactics.  One story tells about Gil’s defense of a client charged with selling illegal whiskey during prohibition.  The evidence was in a bottle displayed in the courtroom.  Gil picked up the bottle and drank the contents.  “That’s not whiskey!” he exclaimed and won the case.  The evidence was gone.

Gil and Mary Louise were the parents of five daughters: Aletha, Evelyn, Kathleen, Geraldine, and Dorothy.  An unnamed son died at birth in 1888.  The family lived in Petaluma for all but a few years while Gil was county recorder in Santa Rosa. Their marriage lasted just short of 50 years.  Gil and Mary Louise both died in 1932.   Gil died on January 24 and Mary Louise seven months later on August 25. Their graves are side-by-side in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Petaluma.

Oates, Bessie Jane Hiatt (1881-1967)

John Quincy Reed’s Photographic portrait of Bessie Jane Hiatt Oates

THE SITTER:

Name: Bessie Jane Hiatt Oates (1881-1967)

Description: Exuding a calm and solemn demeanor, Bessie Jane Hiatt Oates sits on a stool holding a tambourine in her lap. She has positioned the instrument so the viewer can clearly see its Salvation Army imagery and inscription, “Lieut. C. Oates”. Bessie is attired in a Salvation Army uniform typical of the 1880s and 90s. Her form-fitting jacket is fastened with large metal buttons that run the entire length of the garment. Her jacket and dress beneath were probably made of blue wool, a color meant to symbolize the purity of life enjoyed by those cleansed by Jesus and the Holy Ghost. She wears a matching bonnet fastened with a wide ribbon and tied under her left ear. Across the top of her bonnet, unseen in this portrait, would have been a red banner with a white inscription reading, “The Salvation Army”. At her throat is a Salvation Army badge, and on her collar is a metal pin in the shape of an “S”.

Biographical Note: Bessie was born in Akron, Indiana in 1881. In 1897, at the age of sixteen, she married Charles Edward Oates (1874-1963). Bessie was a member of the Petaluma Methodist Church, The Golden Age Club, and the Gann Valley Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. The date of this portrait (sometime between 1897-1898) confirms Bessie was a member of the Salvation Army in the late 1890s. In the late 1880s, the Salvation Army had attempted to establish a strong presence in Petaluma, but, due to antagonism within the community, moved their garrison to Santa Rosa in 1890. In 1897 the Salvation Army re-established a garrison in Petaluma. Consequently, Bessie may have served the Salvation Army through either the Santa Rosa or the Petaluma location. It may be informative that although Bessie and Charles lived at 504 Keokuk Street in Petaluma, they are buried in the Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

Family Affiliation: Bessie Jane Hiatt Oates’ father was Isaac Hiatt (1842-1906). He is buried in Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose. Bessie had four siblings, and all are buried in Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. Her husband was Petaluma carpenter Charles Edward Oates (1874-1963). This would explain the initial “C” inscribed on her tambourine; she may have preferred to be referred to as Mrs. Charles Oates, or she may be holding her husband’s tambourine. It has not been determined if Bessie held the title of lieutenant or if she held it jointly with her husband. With Charles, Bessie had at least five children: Harry J. Oates, Wiliam C. Oates, Lois Oates Backovich, Bernand Oates and Mildred Oates.

The Sitters:

Names: Nancy Jane “Jennie” Whitney Morrow and Etta Attenbury (At the time this portrait was taken, Nancy Jane would have been known by her maiden name, Whitney.)

Description: This cabinet card is a double portrait of Nancy Jane “Jennie” Whitney (on the viewer’s left), and Etta Attenbury (on the viewer’s right). This is an intimate portrait of friends; the girls tilt their heads to touch each other. They are dressed and groomed similarly. Short, straight bangs frame their faces, and large, flat, bows adorn the top of their heads. Both girls also wear plaid blouses, high white collars with metal pins at the throat and large lacy jabots. A large dark bead hangs prominently from the left ear of Nancy Jane Whitney. To view an earlier portrait of these two girls together see: Nancy Jane Whitney, Etta Attenbury and Millie.

Biographical Note: As a member of a prominent Petaluma family, Nancy Jane “Jennie” Whitney attended “Professor Lippitt’s Scientific & Classical Institute” on D Street in Petaluma, and served as a Sunday school teacher at Petaluma’s St. John’s Episcopal Church under Reverend George Barbour Allen (1833-1918). On April 20, 1881, at the age of 26, in her parent’s home at 6th and F Streets in Petaluma, she married George Pilson Morrow of Temescal, Alameda County, California (1858 -1904). George Morrow was connected with the grain industry and president of George P. Morrow & Company, 303 California Street, San Francisco. On June 7, 1897 the Petaluma Daily Courier reported that Nancy Jane had been elected to the School Board of Temescal, a neighborhood of Oakland, California. In 1904, George died at the age of 45. In 1938, Nancy Jane died at age 81. Both were buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.

Family Affiliation: Nancy Jane “Jennie” Whitney was the second daughter of the prominent Petaluma pioneers, Albion Paris Whitney (1825-1884) and Susan Durgin Eastman Whitney (1832-1917). Her father was a California State Senator and wealthy businessman. Her mother managed the family business after his death and was an active participant in the women’s suffrage movement. Her paternal grandmother was Olive Parlin Whitney (1791-1874), and her siblings were Cleora Melissa Whitney Hewlett, Arthur Leslie Whitney, Leona Merrill Whitney, Marcella “Ella” Whitney Wheaton, Albion Harvey Whitney and Clara Whitney Spears. With her husband, George Pilson Morrow (1858-1904) Nancy Jane had two children, Rachel Morrow and George Whitney Morrow. Following in his maternal grandfather’s footsteps, George Whitney Morrow worked in the grocery industry.

McNear, John Augustus (1832-1918) (2 of 2)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of John Augustus McNear

THE PHOTOGRAPHER/ PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO:

Photographer: JOHN QUINCY REED was born in 1841 in Abington, Massachusetts and died in 1902 in Petaluma.

THE SITTER:

Name: John Augustus McNear

Description: When this head-and-shoulders portrait was taken, John Augustus McNear was 45 years old. He appears as a handsome, clear-eyed, and, albeit balding, youthful man. His lack of top-of-the-head hair is compensated by his well-groomed Shenandoah beard. The hair of his right temple has been combed directly back creating the appearance of a wing over his ear. He is austerely attired in a conservative jacket, vest, and a simple white shirt. The absence of a neck tie gives him an almost clerical appearance.

Biographical Note: John Augustus McNear is arguably the most famous and respected of all Petaluma pioneers. He was a man of vision with astonishing energy, brilliance and ambition. Under his influence Petaluma grew from a small riverside frontier town to a thriving center of industry and commerce. With encouragement from his father-in-law, George Bailey Williams (1809-1899), McNear moved to Petaluma in 1856 with his first wife, Clarinda Damsen Williams McNear (1837-1866). He saw that the little town had a bright future, and he immediately invested in a livery stable and hay yard. Trained as a master mariner in his youth, McNear used his profits to create a shipping business on the Petaluma River. He built riverside warehouses where produce, especially wheat and potatoes, could easily be transported via the river’s scowl schooners, invested to straighten the river’s impeding bends, financed a fleet of schooners, built the freight steamer, Josie McNear, and constructed a canal to enable steamships to dock in Petaluma independent of the tides. Wisely diversifying his interests, McNear founded Petaluma’s Bank of Sonoma County and was a backer of local railroad lines. He invested in the Sonoma County & Petaluma Water Company and established a very profitable brick manufacturing facility on Point San Pedro. Praising John McNear in his 1911 History of Sonoma County, Tom Gregory wrote: “Of all the prominent pioneers of the state there is none more deserving of esteem and good will of the people than John A. McNear, for wherever his name is known it means that he has stamped some indelible action in that locality… He is typically a Californian by adoption, always of the most loyal kind, honorable, upright and a man who has forged his way to the front through the exercise of talents given him by nature, and while doing this there has never been a time that he has neglected the duties of a citizen.”

Family Affiliation: John Augustus McNear’s first wife was Clarinda Damsen Williams McNear (1837-1866). His Petaluma pioneer in-laws were George Bailey Williams (1809-1899) and Mehitable Lilly Williams (1807-1899). John had several children with Clarinda, but only one, George Plummer McNear (1857-1947), lived to adulthood. John Augustus McNear’s second wife was Hattie S. Miller McNear (1847-1922) with whom he had two children, John A. McNear (1869-1927) and Erskine B. McNear (1872-1956).

Jewell, George Colby (1856-1925)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of George Colby Jewell

THE SITTER:

Name: George Colby Jewell

Description: George Colby Jewell appears very dapper in this head-and-shoulder portrait. He is meticulously groomed and attired. His hair has been parted on his left and carefully oiled and combed. He also sports a trimmed, chevron mustache. His fashionable jacket has large lapels and a subtle checkered pinstripe, and his matching vest has metallic buttons. The collar of his white shirt has been turned up and beneath it, he wears a geometrically patterned ascot. Unfortunately, the details of the rectangular pin at the center of his ascot can not be discerned.

Biographical Note: According to the Petaluma newspapers, George, as a young man, was very popular and socially active. On August 6, 1876, the Petaluma Weekly Argus reported that George, along with five other young men, would be attending the full four year course at the State University. It specified that George was to take the “scientific course”. The Jewell family ranch was in Chileno Valley where it was reported fine thoroughbred cattle and horses were raised. The Jewell family also had a fashionable, large residence on D Street. George eventually moved to San Rafael and lived with his brother-in-law and sister, Dr. Sallie Jewel Davis. George died in 1925 at the age of 68 or 69 in San Rafael, but was buried in the family plot at Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma.

Family Affiliation: George’s paternal grandparents, Jesse Jewell (1776-1863) and Sally Smith Jewell (1781-1872), were early settlers of Petaluma. George’s parents were Isaac Robinson Jewell (1820-1891) and Ruby Stafford Ridley Jewell (1821-1907), also of Petaluma. All four are buried in Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. George’s uncle, George Clinton Jewel (1822-1863), was also an early Petaluman, and he was married to Polly E. Reynold (1825-1926), a beloved early citizen of Petaluma. George’s elder brother was John Elliott Jewell (1852-1932), and John’s first wife was Clara Belle Sproul Jewell Ivancovich (1856-1939). Clara was a prominent Petaluman, and George may have lived with her and his brother during the early years of their marriage.

Description: This head-and-shoulders carte de visite portrays a young woman who glances intently down and to her right. Her brown hair is pulled to the back of her head into a large bun and short, full, curls adorn her forehead. She wears a front-buttoned, dark blouse which is heavily adorned with soutache embroidery. A stiff, lacy, white collar surrounds her neck and a large, matching bow is tied at her throat. At the center of her bow is a large, bright, gold brooch from which appears to fall a gold chain. This portrait has undoubtedly been masterfully tinted by a professional retoucher. The colors have been applied with subtlety and skill creating a greater sense of depth and intimacy. The sitter’s brown hair has been highlighted with gold streaks, her cheeks glow pink, her lips are a matte rose, her eyes shine with just a spot of green-blue, and her gold jewelry sparkles.

Both girls also wear plaid blouses, high white collars with metal pins at the throat and large lacy jabots. A large dark bead hangs prominently from the left ear of Nancy Jane Whitney.

Biographical Note: Little is known of Etta Attenbury. It appears she was a close friend of Nancy Jane (Jennie) Whitney. See the portrait in this archive of Attenbury with Whitney and an additional young woman identified as “Millie”.

Family Affiliation: The family affiliation of Etta Attenbury has not been identified.

McNear, Jennie Otis (1857- May 27, 1883)(2 of 2)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of Jennie Otis McNear

THE SITTER:

Name: Jennie Otis McNear

Description: In this carte de visite, Jennie Otis McNear rests her arms on a studio prop and looks forlornly into the distance, striking a somber poise which foreshadows her early and tragic death. This portrait was taken when she was between 23 and 26 years old. Her hairstyle is that of a young woman. Parted in the center, most of her dark, wavy, locks fall freely. The top front portion of her hair has been pulled to the back, and, as a crown, she wears a heavy braided hairpiece. Her simple dress is complemented by a white lace ruff, white lace cuffs, and four streaming ribbons which gather at her neck. She wears two dark neck chains, attached to the shorter one appears to be a locket. At her throat is what appears to be a brooch and a dark bead. If you look closely, you can see she is also wearing a wedding ring. This allows us to date this photo between May 13, 1880 (the date of her marriage to George Plummer McNear, 1857-1947) and May 27, 1883 (the date of her death).

Biographical Note: Jennie Otis McNear was born in 1857 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. At the age of seven, she moved to Petaluma with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Otis. After graduating from Petaluma High School in 1875, she taught school in Salinas, San Leandro and San Diego. On May 13, 1880, she married prominent Petaluma businessman, George Plummer McNear (1857-1947), and together they had one child, Clara McNear (married name, Leppo). Jennie’s early, tragic death on May 27, 1883 resulted from the disastrous explosion of the steamship, Pilot, and was recounted in this excerpt from the Marin Journal, published May 31, 1883:

“No story could be more sad than that which tells of the early and sudden death of Mrs. George P. McNear. She was the idolized daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Otis—their only child—and great as was their parental pride and love for her, their affection was returned with all the ardor of her strong and affectionate nature. Jennie had been a little more than three years the wife of Mr. George P. McNear, and the day of her burial, last Sunday, was the second anniversary of the birth of their little daughter. She was the very personification of rosy health; in form and feature a model of beauty; the rosy pathway of her life was reflected in her cheerful spirits, and as daughter, wife, and mother, her character seemed perfection. This was the tender daughter, the bride-wife, the clinging mother, her good-bye kiss fresh on the lips of her husband-lover and child, and her feet led by filial affection toward a suffering mother, who was met by the appalling catastrophe to the steamer Pilot last Friday.” Marin Journal, volume 23, number 12, May 31, 1883.

Family Affiliation: Jennie Otis was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Charles W. Otis. A man named C. W. Otis was an early librarian in Petaluma, and may have been her father. Jennie was the first wife of prominent Petaluma businessman, George Plummer McNear (m. May 13, 1880). Their only child was Clara McNear Leppo (1881-1979). https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/105784417/jennie-mcnear.

Kopf, Alice A. Vestal (1858 -1938)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of Alice Vestal (Kopf)

THE SITTER:

Name: Alice A. Vestal (Kopf)

Description: According to its reverse inscription, this portrait commemorates Alice Vestal’s graduation from Petaluma High School in 1879. She is elaborately attired for the occasion. She wears an ornate, white lace dress embellished with multiple layers of flounce. This flounce adorns the collar, cuffs, and train. It adorns the top half of the skirt in diagonal layers and the bottom half in four layers of hem trim. She wears a floral corsage, and garlands have been placed between the diagonal flounces of her skirt. Her hair is meticulously arranged. Her forehead and temples are covered in a mass of short curls, a double-twisted bun adorned with white flowers sits atop her head, and a single, thin, long sausage curl rests on her left shoulder. Her jewelry includes large drop earrings and wrist cuffs. It appears this portrait was taken after the graduation ceremony: in her gloved hands, she holds what is most likely her graduation certificate and official ribbon-bound scroll.

Biographical Note: Alice Vestal (Kopf) was born in 1858 in Bloomfield, California, but lived most of her life in Petaluma. At the age of 21, she graduated from Petaluma High School in 1879. Often featured in the society sections of the Petaluma newspapers, she was a beloved matron of the community. She was a long-time member of the Petaluma Antietam Relief Corps and the Silver Spray Rebekah Lodge No. 86, serving several years as its Noble Grand. She was buried in Petaluma’s Cypress Hill Memorial Park.

Family Affiliation: Alice Vestal Kopf was the daughter of Petaluma pioneers Lewis Vestal (1824-1911) and Emily Minerva Cowles Vestal (1829-1890). The 1870 census documents her living in Petaluma with her parents and siblings. The 1880 census documents her living in Petaluma with her parents and younger sibling, Abbie D. Vestal, at 211 Howard Street. Alice married Petaluma businessman Adolph Albert Kopf (1855-1921) in 1881. They had at least three children: Alberta Kopf (1881-1906), Jessie Beryl Kopf (1883-1904), and Roy V. Kopf (1886-1963). Adolph died in 1921, but curiously, the 1900 census states Alice’s marital status as “widowed”. It also documents her living in Petaluma with father and children at 786 Liberty Street. Alice was the niece of Petaluma pioneer Lemuel Hadley Vestal (1841-1932). There are numerous portraits on this website of additional Vestal family members. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56227780/alice-a-kopf.

Whitney, Albion “Albie” Harvey (1870-1907) (3 of 5)

John Quincy Reed’s Portrait Photograph of Albion “Albie” Harvey Whitney

THE SITTER:

Name: Albion “Albie” Harvey Whitney

Description: Albion “Albie” Harvey Whitney was 5 or 6 years old when this portrait was taken. To accommodate the size of his sitter, Reed has repurposed the fringed armrest of his studio chair to serve as the chair’s back. The child sits with his right leg tucked under his left and his hands resting on his thighs. He is dressed in knickers and a matching jacket with a large shawl collar. The collar and the hems of his sleeves and knickers are trimmed in three rows of dark ribbon, and the bottom sides of his knickers have metal buttons. He also wears a white shirt with a dark bow tie, white leggings and dark leather, lace-up boots. His hair has been groomed especially for his photo shoot; down both sides of his head hang sausage curls and a high mound of hair crowns the top of his head.

Biographical Note: Albion (Albie) Whitney was born in Petaluma on April 10, 1870, and according to an article in the Petaluma Argus-Courier he received a “high education”. It also states that he traveled extensively in his youth, visiting the Orient and spending considerable time in Alaska, “where his health was seriously damaged.” In 1904, he departed Petaluma to work in San Mateo for his brother, Arthur Leslie Whitney (1858-1914) the founder of the Leslie Salt Refining Company where Albion was secretary and manager. Albie died tragically at age 35. On May 21, 1907, his car was struck by a passenger train, and it was reported he died instantly. Petaluma Argus-Courier, June 5, 1907, p. 3.

Family Affiliation: Albion “Albie” Harvey Whitney was the sixth child of the prominent Petaluma pioneers Albion Paris Whitney (1825-1884) and Susan Durgin Eastman Whitney (1832-1917). THE SITTER:

Name: Calvin Eastman Whitney

Description: In this head-and-shoulders portrait, Calvin Eastman Whitney looks down to his right with a blank, distant gaze. He appears to be a young man in his early twenties. His hair is combed, oiled, and parted on his right. He sports a sparse, chevron mustache and wiry sideburns. He is attired in a double-breasted jacket with large, piped lapels and a white shirt with a dark, simple, crossed bow tie beneath a long, pointed collar.

Biographical Note: Calvin Eastman Whitney was born in Maine and traveled to California as a child with his father Albion Whitney. His mother and siblings joined them, and the family established their household in Petaluma. Due to Albion’s rapid success as a Bay Area merchant, the Whitney family soon became wealthy and prominent. Calvin attended Edward L. Lippitt’s school on D Street in Petaluma and, after graduating from Harvard, returned to California. In 1875 he began working as a partner in his father’s merchandise business in San Francisco. Calvin also became a partner of the Brigham Whitney Company, a wholesale dealer in dairy produce located at 320 Front Street in San Francisco. In 1885 a “Certificate of Special Partnership” published in the Petaluma Weekly Argus proclaimed Calvin had gone into business with his younger brother, Arthur L. Whitney, as “general merchandise, commissions, shipping, and forwarding merchants.”

Calvin died in 1891 at the age of 40 from a tragic accident. While attempting to remove debris from the roof of his newly constructed San Francisco home located at 2010 Washington Street, he fell through a skylight to the basement and died instantly. Calvin was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
